When it is time to replace the roof on your home, finding a local contractor to handle the roofing installation is the faster and easiest way to get the work done. There are many roofing contractors to choose from in most areas, and some specialize in alternative roofing materials in case you are looking at some different options.

Preparing The Roof

When the roofing installation service arrives to start work, they will need to remove the old roofing from the house. You may need to arrange for a dumpster to hold the old material, or the roofer may have one delivered. Before you have the dumpster placed on the property, it is essential to check with any authorities like your HOA or the city to see if you can set it at the curb.

If the container needs to go on the property, make sure you know where your septic tank is if you have one so that the container and the truck delivering it do not damage anything.

The roofing installation contractor and their crew will come and remove all the old roofing material, leaving the plywood or boards that make up the roof structure exposed for inspection. If there is any damage to that material, the roofing contractor can repair it before starting the roofing installation on your home. Older board roofs can also be overlaid with plywood to firm up the structure and extend the roof's life.

Roof Installation

Once the roof is ready, the roofing installation will start with a layer of roofing paper or felt paper that is stapled to the wood. The roofing paper acts as a vapor barrier between the roofing material and the wood under it, and it is used with most roofing materials.

If you are having asphalt shingles put in place, the shingles can be placed directly on the paper and nailed to the roof. Each course or row of shingles is laid down in a pattern that staggers the joints and overlaps the rows to minimize the places that water can get through the shingles.

Any valleys formed where roof surfaces join are covered in aluminum flashing before the shingles are put on the roof, and the shingles will overlap those areas so water runs off. Flashing is also used along the vertical edges, and a drip edge is installed along the base of the roof on each side.

When the entire roof is complete, a roof cap is created from asphalt shingles along the roof's peak that wraps over the top to sure that rain or snow at the top cannot get under the shingles at the top of the roof.
