If you live in an area that has very strong winds, you'll need to use a roofing material that is known for holding up against windstorms. Otherwise, your roof shingles will eventually be blown off and will need to be replaced. Fortunately, even some of the cheaper roofing materials can resist strong winds when you are having your old roof replaced with an entirely new one after severe roof damage.

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are very affordable. However, they have been designed to withstand very strong wind speeds. Architectural shingles are the most durable and can withstand the strongest winds.

Synthetic Slate

Synthetic slate roofs are very capable of holding up to strong winds. They are also gorgeous and will give your home a very old-world look. These types of roofs are very expensive to install but will have superior properties after they have been installed.

Metal Roof Panels

Metal roofs can be very resistant to strong winds when they are installed with very few sheets. This is because there will be fewer openings in which strong winds can lift metal panels up. Because metal is very durable, it's also capable of resisting damage caused by debris hurled at the roof.

Synthetic Cedar Shake

If you want the look of cedar shake, but without having to worry about your cedar shake warping or cracking, you have the option of using synthetic cedar shake. Typically, the synthetic version of any roofing option will be able to better resist strong winds.

Spanish Tile

Tile roofs are very elegant, but traditional tile roofs can also be very heavy. Therefore, it's a good idea to have a lighter synthetic tile roof installed on your home. For tile roofs to be resistant to wind, they must be installed properly. However, while they are less likely to be ripped off the roof by strong winds, they are still vulnerable to being damaged by debris hurled at the roof by strong winds.

Other Factors

There are various other factors that can influence how well your roof will be able to resist wind and rain. For example, whether or not the gable end wall is braced correctly will affect the ability of the wind to press against the hinge line found at the joint between levels.

It's also important to have a moderate roof pitch and a modest overhang. If you are concerned about whether your roof will be able to hold up against strong winds, make sure to bring up your concerns with a residential roofing specialist.
