Years ago, you would drive down the street and see shingle roofs on almost every home. This is no longer the case. These days, you see all sorts of different materials: tile, sheet metal, slate, and even rolled asphalt roofing. This might have you wondering if shingles are outdated or have gone by the wayside. While it might appear so, that is really not the case. While other roofing materials have become more commonplace, there are still plenty of homeowners for whom asphalt shingles are a good choice. If the following are true, they might be right for you!

You are on a limited budget.

Asphalt shingles are one of the most affordable roofing materials. This is partially because the technology to make them has been around for so long and also because the materials to make them are not overly costly. A lot of shingles these days are made from recycled materials, which keeps the cost under control. If you're on a tighter budget and can't afford slate, tile, or metal roofing, asphalt shingles are a completely functional and more affordable choice.

You want a traditional look.

Some homes just don't look right with a modern, metal, or tile roof. If your home has a lot of character or if it was built in the Victorian style, then you might want to pick asphalt shingle roofing purely to preserve its appearance. In some areas, like those with HOAs, building guidelines might even require that you re-roof your home with a more traditional roof material if it is over a certain age.

You want to make your own repairs.

Making your own roof repairs is not always a wise choice. But if you have a background in construction or are really handy, you may want the comfort of knowing you'll be able to make basic roof repairs. You can likely do that with an asphalt roof. Asphalt shingles are lightweight and easy to lug onto the roof. They are also easy to secure with basic roofing nails. Tile, slate, and metal are all harder to work on and therefore an inferior choice for those with a DIY mindset.

If you are looking for a new roof, don't discard asphalt shingles as an option. You may not see them on every home anymore, but they are still out there, waiting to be installed by homeowners who need them.
